S28 | New Horizons and Research Perspectives on Latin America and the Caribbean

What is the current political agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean? How are IR scholars approaching these issues? Which new theoretical, methodological and epistemological tools are being developed to assess these regions' relationship with the 'international'? The beginning of the millennium saw the rise of the post-neoliberal governments in Latin America, supported by new trends of social movements that, at the same time, played a key role in transnational activism. Alternative patterns of regional integration have been explored and balance of power in the region has been challenged. IR scholars have addressed these issues, developing different research perspectives in order to understand them.

The key aim of the section is to explore these dynamics and the theoretical approaches being used to explain them. The section would speak directly to the conference theme on the global crisis of capitalism, taking into account the Latin American context in particular. The post-neoliberal turnaround can be understood as a response to the crisis in the region during and after the 'lost decade' of the 1980s. Today, in this scenario of world crisis, a new change of direction is underway.

We encourage contributions that explore the research agenda around these transformations and aim to contribute to the study of international relations in Latin America, as well as to the wider IR agenda. The section also encourages multidisciplinary approaches to the Latin American political and socio-economic developments.
